World News, May 29, 2023 – Obesity has become a major problem worldwide. In the quest to solve this problem, many people are searching for quick ways to lose weight instead of adopting controlled eating and exercise as a safe method. In addition to weight loss, looking beautiful and youthful has also become a desire for many individuals. The method of cosmetic surgery is widely adopted in the United States for weight loss and achieving a beautiful appearance. However, this method is proving to be deadly.

It is evident that in today’s era, people are obsessed with having a beautiful and attractive body. Plastic surgeons take advantage of this obsession and charge hefty amounts from patients for even minor surgeries. If a plastic surgeon offers a low-cost option for surgery and treatment, a crowd of patients flocks to them.

In Mexico, many people have lost their lives due to undergoing cosmetic surgery. Recent cases have revealed complaints of fungal infections among those who underwent cosmetic surgery. Following this, American and Mexican authorities have urged the World Health Organization to declare a “public health emergency” in response to this outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States reported that approximately 12,000 people undergo such plastic surgeries each year, but many end up losing their lives in pursuit of cheaper options. In cases of patient deaths, it has also been revealed that doctors neglected cleanliness in their hospitals to save costs. Not only that, they sometimes reused the same needle multiple times. Investigations are currently underway against such doctors.

Many American citizens travel to Mexico for cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction, breast augmentation, and Brazilian butt lift. During these procedures, anesthesia is administered to numb the lower part of the spine.

Dallas Smith from the CDC stated that medications used during anesthesia in clinics in the city of Matamoros, Mexico, were found to be contaminated, leading to the current outbreak. The CDC wrote, “Officials have identified two clinics associated with the outbreak, the River Side Surgical Center and Clinic K3, which were closed on May 13, 2023.”

Hundreds of individuals are at risk due to these surgical procedures. The CDC has already identified 25 individuals in the United States with “suspected” or “probable” cases of fungal meningitis. Meanwhile, between January and mid-May, more than 200 Americans who visited clinics in Matamoros are at risk.

Symptoms of meningitis include fever, headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and changes in mental state. The CDC has advised individuals who have undergone cosmetic surgery in Matamoros to seek medical attention immediately if they experience these symptoms.
