While Tesla reigns as the leader in EV sales, it’s important to note that the company isn’t the largest automaker overall. Nonetheless, this achievement marks a significant milestone for Tesla and highlights the growing popularity of electric vehicles worldwide.
The Tesla Model Y has overtaken the Toyota Camry as the best-selling car in the world for the first time ever. The Tesla Model Y has overcome Toyota’s RAV4 and Corolla models to lead the global sales rankings in the first quarter of 2023, according to analyst data from Jato Dynamics (reported by Motor1). That’s especially noteworthy considering that the 2023 Model Y’s starting price of $47,490 is far more than the starting prices of the Corolla ($21,550) and RAV4 ($27,575).

According to data provided by Jato Dynamics, the Tesla Model Y sold 267,200 units globally in Q1, outpacing sales of the Corolla and RAV4 by 256,400 and 214,700 units, respectively. That amounts to a roughly 69 percent year-over-year gain for the Model Y, according to Tesla CEO and meme king Elon Musk, will undoubtedly endorse. Even before the Model Y was released, Musk expressed confidence in its performance, forecasting that demand for the vehicle would be “in the 500k to 1 million unit per year level.”
Though significant for Tesla, the Model Y’s triumph isn’t particularly unexpected. Although Tesla doesn’t give a precise breakdown of sales, it did disclose that over 400,000 Model Y and Model 3 vehicles had been delivered to consumers in the first quarter of 2023. Competing automakers continue to make electric vehicles slowly, which allows Tesla to dominate the EV industry. And over the past few years, Tesla has often reduced the price of the majority of its portfolio, including the Model Y, This could have influenced the rise in sales.
While a Tesla EV is now the best-selling car worldwide, it should be noted that the firm isn’t the largest carmaker overall in the globe. Compared to other automakers, Volkswagen, Toyota, General Motors, and Ford all record better revenue and unit sales. Tesla, which squeaks in at number 19 for 2022.
The 2022 Model Y is most likely the best-selling automobile or truck worldwide.
Although it fell short of that objective, it did place third in the worldwide rankings for 2022 and climb as high as sixth on the list of the ten best-selling vehicles in America, amid stiff opposition from trucks and SUVs. It also rose 15 spots to become the fourth-best-selling car in China and the best-selling vehicle in both Europe and California last year. And that’s in spite of a ban on Tesla ownership in China and many recalls due to safety issues.
